Which state has the finest national anthem ? We asked authoritative FM donor and music reviewer David Mellor to rank each piece and tell us his verdict .
so, without foster bustle … we begin at number one.

controversially, possibly, it ’ randomness Uruguay that takes the top spot musically for David Mellor. It ’ s an anthem with real number pungency .
“ decidedly the best of the south american anthems, Uruguay ’ s National Anthem sounds like it could have been written by Rossini, ” says David .

David gives a big thumb up to this “ in truth good tune ”, which was used by Sir Edward Elgar in his piece Polonia, in a tribute to Poland during the First World War .
What an hymn ! Is it any wonder the nation that gave us Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov has such a cracker ?
here ’ sulfur David ’ s verdict : “ I ’ ve loved this tune since I used to hear it at aureate decoration ceremonies for the Olympics. I ’ ve flush got it on my mobile earphone. ”
A surprise entry at No. 4 is the swiss anthem. In David ’ randomness scene, Switzerland is playing with the adult boys.
“ Plenty of attitude here, and a properly tune fighting to get out, ” says David. “ This is a top 10 one, for me. ”
David quite likes the japanese anthem – dreamy, brooding and slightly like an epic poem film score .
“ It ’ randomness moody, and if not brilliant, distillery pretty good and entire of atmosphere. ”
All stand. Hands on hearts. Cue the tears and the confuse of gold medals. We ’ rhenium heading state-side…

“ Joseph Haydn surely knew how to write a bang-up tune. And he doesn ’ t let the Germans depressed hera, does he ? ”
He surely doesn ’ t. A home anthem penned by Haydn was constantly going to be a potent rival – the musical equivalent of a german set-piece external of the penalty box .
A classical tune – with all the force of a Zinadine Zidane head-butt. But how does David rate it ?
“ A wholly memorable tune – this one is hard to beat. ”

“ You could imagine Rossini writing that, ” says David of the italian national anthem. “ not on one of his best days … but compared to most of the rest, it ’ s actually quite good. ”
domain of my Fathers, David says, “ is the kind of tune that makes me wish I was Welsh. It ’ s a in truth good matchless. ”
And David’s least favourite anthem?
That would be the National Anthem of the Czech Republic, of which David says : “ Prague is associated with music, not stuff like this. ”
