continuity [edit ]

Oz the Great and Powerful features several aesthetic allusions, homages, and technical parallels to Baum ‘s novels and the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film, The Wizard of Oz. The film ‘s unfold sequence is presented in black and white. When Oscar is caught up in the tornado, the sound recording switches from monaural to stereo and finally environment legal. [ 15 ] The movie shifts to full color when Oscar arrives in Oz ; additionally, the aspect proportion gradually widens from 4:3 Academy ratio to 2.35:1 widescreen. [ 16 ] [ 17 ] As in the 1939 film, Glinda travels in giant bubbles, and the Emerald City is actually emerald ; in the novel, characters wear tint glasses to make it appear indeed, though during the battle preparations sequence Oz can be seen wearing emerald goggles. The iconic fleeceable search of the Wicked Witch of the West is closer to her spirit in the 1939 film, as the Witch is a short, one-eyed hag in the novel. The severe Witches are portrayed as sisters, an idea which originated in the 1939 film. besides from the 1939 film is that several actors who play Oz characters make cameo in the Kansas segments, such as Frank, Oscar ‘s adjunct whom he refers to as his “ aim imp ” ( Frank ‘s “ Oz ” counterpart is the winged monkey Finley ) and a young disabled daughter who serves as the Kansas counterpart to China Girl ( in Kansas, Oscar is ineffective to make the wheelchair-using youthful girlfriend walk, and gets a prospect to do therefore when he repairs China Girl ‘s unwrap legs ) ; Annie who inspires Oscar to be a good and capital person ( Annie ‘s “ Oz ” counterpart, Glinda, besides inspires Oscar to be a better person ) informs him that she has been proposed to by John Gale, presumably hinting at Dorothy Gale ‘s parental lineage. [ 18 ] Annie is seen wearing a gingham full-dress, a practice excellently associated with Dorothy. other referenced characters include the Scarecrow, who is built by the town as a scare tactic ; the Tin Woodman, whose creator is the Master Tinker that can build “ anything ” ; and the lion that attacks Finley, a reference to the Cowardly Lion. [ 12 ] similarly, assorted other races of Oz are depicted besides the Munchkins ; the Quadlings, the taiwan doll inhabitants of Dainty China Country, and the Winkies ( who went nameless in the 1939 movie ). similarly, Glinda is referred to by her title in the fresh ( the Good Witch of the South ), unlike the 1939 film, where her character ‘s entitle is “ dependable hag of the North ” ( due to her character being merged with the Good Witch of the North ). Glinda is besides the daughter of the former King of Oz, though in the novels, Ozma is the King ‘s daughter. Theodora ‘s tears leave streak-like scars on her face, reflecting her weakness to water in the original floor. besides, Oz is presented as a real place as it is in the novel, and not as a possible dream as the 1939 film implies. [ 19 ]

production [edit ]

Disney ‘s history with Oz [edit ]

After the achiever of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, Walt Disney planned to produce an animated film based on the first of L. Frank Baum ‘s Oz books. however, Roy O. Disney, the president of Walt Disney Productions, was informed by Baum ‘s estate of the realm that they had sold the film rights to the beginning book to Samuel Goldwyn, who re-sold it to Louis B. Mayer in 1938. [ 20 ] The film was ironically approved due to the success of Snow White. [ 21 ] The project was then developed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer into the well-known musical adaptation which was released the following year. In 1954, when the film rights to Baum ‘s remaining thirteen Oz books were made available, Walt Disney Productions acquired them [ 22 ] for consumption in Walt Disney ‘s television series Disneyland which led to the live-action film Rainbow Road to Oz, which was abandoned and never completed. [ 23 ] Disney ‘s history with the Oz series continued with the 1985 film Return to Oz, which performed ill, both critically and commercially, [ 24 ] [ 25 ] [ 26 ] but developed a cult following since its unblock by fans of the books who considered it a more close adaptation to the Oz books than the 1939 authoritative. [ 27 ] [ 28 ] After Return to Oz, Disney lost the film rights to the Oz books and they were subsequently reverted to the public world. [ 29 ] In 2005, Disney produced the television receiver film The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz which aired on its network ABC .

Development [edit ]

Upon the unblock of Wicked, screenwriter Mitchell Kapner felt he had missed his opportunity to explore the origins of the Wizard of Oz character. [ 30 ] In 2009, he met with producer Joe Roth who turned down his current pitches and asked if he had any early ideas. Kapner, who had been reading the Oz series to his children, outlined the plots of the books. Roth stopped him on the sixth book, The Emerald City of Oz, which had some of the Wizard ‘s backstory. Roth said :

“ … during the years that I spent running Walt Disney Studios [ … ] I learned about how hard it was to find a fairy fib with a good strong male protagonist. You ‘ve got your Sleeping Beauties, your Cinderellas and your Alices. But a fairy narrative with a male supporter is very heavily to come by. But with the lineage report of the Wizard of Oz, here was a fagot fib report with a natural male supporter. Which is why I knew that this was an theme for a movie that was authentically worth pursuing. ” [ 31 ]

Kapner and co-writer Palak Patel were turned down by Sony Pictures [ 30 ] before the project was set up at Walt Disney Pictures in 2009. Disney president Sean Bailey commissioned Oz the Great and Powerful ( under the work claim “ Brick” ) during the tenure of chair Dick Cook, who was succeeded by Rich Ross, and late Alan Horn, a succession in management rarely survived by a major studio release. [ 30 ] David Lindsay-Abaire was late hired to do a re-write. [ 29 ] Roth initially sought Robert Downey Jr. for the championship character of the Wizard. [ 32 ] Sam Raimi was hired to direct in 2010 from a shortlist including Sam Mendes and Adam Shankman. [ 32 ] In January 2011, Downey declined the function [ 30 ] and it was offered to Johnny Depp, who had previously collaborated with the studio apartment in Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland. [ 33 ] Depp liked the character but was already committed to The Lone Ranger. [ 30 ] In February, James Franco accepted $ 7 million to star in the film, five months before film was scheduled to begin. [ 30 ] Franco and Raimi had previously worked together on the Spider-Man trilogy, in which Franco played Peter Parker ‘s best ally Harry Osborn. [ 34 ] Franco received train for the character from magician Lance Burton. [ 30 ] Kapner adapted the quality of the Wizard from the novels to conceptualize an original narrative, and Raimi ensured that the film would “ nod fondly ” to the 1939 film by inserting references and homages to it. [ 35 ] In June 2011, composer Danny Elfman was chosen to score the film despite Elfman and Raimi having fallen-out over Spider-Man 2 and Elfman having declared they would never again work together. [ 36 ] Disney wanted to reduce the film ‘s output budget to $ 200 million. [ 34 ] Casting calls were put out for local actors in Michigan. [ 37 ]

Filming [edit ]

Principal photography for Oz the Great and Powerful began July 25, 2011, at Raleigh Michigan Studios in Pontiac, Michigan, employing 3D cameras. [ 38 ] Raimi opted to use hardheaded sets in junction with computer-generated imagination during filming. [ 39 ] Physical sets were constructed indeed the actors could have a ocular reference, as opposed to using k screen engineering for every fit. Chroma key compositing was only used for background pieces. [ 38 ] Zach Braff and Joey King were on fixed, recording their dialogue simultaneously with the other actors, whenever their CG characters were give in a scene. puppetry was employed for a physical interpretation of the China Girl to serve as a ocular key-point for actors to manipulate. [ 40 ] Braff wore a blue gesticulate capture suit to create Finley ‘s movements and had a camera near to his front for the flying sequences to obtain facial movements. Art director Robert Stromberg, who worked on Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, drew inspiration from the films of Frank Capra and James Wong Howe to achieve the Art Deco design he envisioned for the Emerald City. Stromberg contrasted the colorful tonal qualities of Oz with the moderate appearance of Alice, affirming that although both films explore like fantasy worlds, the overall atmosphere and landscape of each “ are completely unlike. ” [ 41 ] In 2011, Stromberg and his team visited the Walt Disney archives during the pre-production phase to reference production artwork from Disney ‘s animated films such as Pinocchio, Bambi, Fantasia, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, drawing from designs and textures in decree to give certain settings in the film an affectionate nod to the Disney expressive style. [ 42 ] Costume couturier Gary Jones focused on authenticity with his wardrobe designs : “ We started by doing a fortune of research and having ideas of the ways ( costumes ) should look in decree to be ( historically accurate ) but as we went on, we actually began creating a whole new earth. ” [ 43 ]

My foremost instinct was, there are such iconic images in the Wizard of Oz movie, it would be wrong for us to re-create the Yellow Brick Road or the Emerald City in a different way. We had to go 180 degrees in the early commission. We ‘re good going to have to make our own Oz .

Sam Raimi on recreating the Land of Oz under legalities. [ 30 ]

Although the film is a apparitional prequel to the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film The Wizard of Oz, it was not allowed legally to be considered as such. The filmmakers had to toe a ticket line between calling the film to mind but not infringing upon it. To that end, Disney had a copyright adept on jell to ensure no violation occurred. The production team worked under the restraint of abiding by the stipulations set away by Warner Bros., the legal owner of the rights to iconic elements of the 1939 film ( via its Turner Entertainment sister company which purchased the MGM film library in 1986 ), including the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland. Therefore, Disney was unable to use them nor any original fictional character likenesses from the 1939 film. [ 44 ] This extended to the green of the Wicked Witch ‘s bark for which Disney used what its legal department considered a sufficiently unlike shade dubbed “ Theostein ” ( a portmanteau of “ Theodora ” and “ Frankenstein “ ). [ 45 ] Additionally, the studio could not use the key signature kuki gram molecule of Margaret Hamilton ‘s portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West nor could they employ the yellow brick road ‘s whirl design for Munchkinland. [ 40 ] The technical besides ensured that the Emerald City was not besides close in appearance to the original Emerald City in the 1939 movie. While Warner and Disney did not engage in copyright battle, they did file rival trademarks. In October 2012, Disney filed a brand on “ Oz the Great and Powerful ” while one week subsequently Warner filed its own trademarks for “ The Great and Powerful Oz. ” The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office suspended Warner ‘s undertake at a brand because Disney had filed basically the lapp one a week early. [ 46 ] In addition to the legal issues, the movie was besides faced with delays when respective vomit members went on suspension ascribable to unrelated commitments and circumstances. Rachel Weisz left halfway through the inject to film her stallion function in The Bourne Legacy, Michelle Williams was required to promote the spill of My Week with Marilyn and Franco ‘s father died during production. Roth compared the job of managing overlapping schedules to “ being an air-traffic restrainer. ” [ 30 ] Mila Kunis ‘s makeup and prosthetics were supervised by Greg Nicotero and demanded four hours to apply and another hour to remove, with Kunis taking closely two months to fully recover from the subsequent removal of the makeup from her skin. [ 30 ] [ 47 ] Raimi had to edit the terrorization nature of several scenes to secure Disney ‘s coveted PG-rating from the MPAA. [ 30 ] Sony Pictures Imageworks was contracted to create the movie ‘s ocular effects. [ 48 ]

music [edit ]

Composer Danny Elfman noted that the film ‘s score was accessibly flying to produce, with a majority of the music being written in six weeks. [ 49 ] Regarding the tonic quality of the score, Elfman stated, “ We ‘re going to take an approach that ‘s old school but not self-consciously antique. Let the melodrama be melodrama, let everything be what it is. I besides think there ‘s the advantage that I ‘m able to write narratively, and when I ‘m able to write narratively I can besides move quick because that ‘s my natural instincts, I can tell a history in the music. ” [ 50 ] american english singer-songwriter Mariah Carey recorded a promotional single called “ Almost Home “ written by Carey, Simone Porter, Justin Gray, Lindsey Ray, Tor Erik Hermansen, and Mikkel Eriksen ( a.k.a. Stargate ) for the soundtrack of the film. The single was released on February 19, 2013 by Island Records. [ 51 ]

Snowflakes, music boxes and cryptic animals all leap through the screen door towards the consultation as the history unfolds. ” [ 84 ] Justin Chang of Variety had a shuffle reaction, writing that the movie “ gets some mileage out of its game performances, juicy output design and the unchained enthusiasm conductor Sam Raimi brings to a sparse, simplistic origin fib. ” [ 85 ] He besides compared the film ‘s scale with the Star Wars prequel trilogy adding, “ In a substantial smell, Oz the Great and Powerful has a certain affinity with George Lucas ‘s Star Wars prequels, in the way it presents a beautiful but borderline-sterile digital update of a world that was richer, arrant and a bunch more fun in lower-tech phase. here, besides, the actors often look artificially superimposed against their CG backdrop, though the saturation of the fakery generates its own ocular captivation. ” [ 85 ] /Film rated the film 7 out of 10, saying it had “ many charms ” while considering it to be “ basically Army of Darkness : ( Normal guy lands in charming domain, is forced to go on quest to save that kingdom. ) But equitable when you see Raimi ‘s kinetic, key signature manner starting to unleash, the report forces the film back into its Disney husk to play to the masses.
